Alfred William "Al" Small, Jr.

May 2, 1938 — November 11, 2011

Al Small, 73, passed away peacefully on Nov. 10 at his home in Stone Mountain, GA. He was born in Birmingham, AL to parents Alfred W. & Mary Jim Welch Small. He was an Eagle Scout. He graduated from North Fulton High School in Atlanta, GA in 1956, then studied at Emory University from 1956-59, where he attained membership in Alpha Epsilon Upsilon Honorary Scholastic Society. Interested in drama, he studied acting in California in the early 1960s. In 1967 Al began a 43-year career with the Salvation Army, which included over 30 years with their Boys & Girls Club program serving in various capacities, including Executive Director of the Metro Atlanta Boys & Girls Clubs and Metro Atlanta Program Coordinator. In 2000 he transitioned into the position of Grants Writer, first in support of the Boys & Girls Clubs program, and in 2003 in support of all Salvation Army Metro Atlanta Area Command programs. He is survived by his brother, Richard and his sister, Mary Dean Small. Arrangements are being handled by the Pasley-Fletcher Funeral Home in Thomaston, GA, where a funeral service on Saturday, Nov. 19 at 11:00am. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests that donations be made to The Salvation Army, P. O. Box 33006, Decatur, GA 30033, in memory of Al Small.
