Cpl. James Edward Mcabee

Cpl, James Edward McAbee, U.S. Army, Company B, 1st Battalion, 29th Infantry Regimental Combat Team, was listed as Missing in Action while fighting the enemy near Hadong, South Korea, on July 27, 1950. A memorial service will be held on Wednesday, July 27, 2016, at 2:00 PM, in South View Cemetery with full military honors. Dr. Glenn Gilstrap will officiate. Cpl. McAbee, a native of Thomaston, was a 1946 graduate of R. E. Lee Institute, where he excelled in academics and athletics. He was the son of the late Mr. and Mrs. Alonzo P. McAbee who resided in Thomaston at the time of notification of their son's MIA status. His brother, 2nd Lt. Charles W. McAbee, U.S. Air Force, was killed on September 2, 1950, at the age of 24, after his F-84 fighter crashed in Germany. The McAbees received 'regrets' notification telegrams from the military within a 24-hour time period. Cpl. McAbee is memorialized at the Honolulu Memorial and the National Memorial Cemetery of the Pacific in Hawaii. He was awarded the Purple Heart, National Defense Service Medal, Korean Service Medal, Republic of Korea Presidential Unit Citation, United Nations Service Medal, Republic of Korea War Service Medal, and Combat Infantryman Badge. Survivors include nieces and nephews: William H. (Bill) McAbee II of Savannah, GA ; Mike McAbee of Sandersville, GA; Lady McAbee Yonker and Peck McAbee, both of Atlanta, GA. Several cousins also survive. We invite the community to come by Fletcher-Day Funeral Home to sign the register in honor Cpl. McAbee. Fletcher-Day Funeral Home is in charge of all arrangements.
