Elder William E. "Billy" Morgan, beloved member of the community and dedicated servant of the Lord, died on Monday, April 7, 2025, at the age of 80, at Upson Regional Medical Center. Born on June 21, 1944, in Upson County, Billy led a life marked by service, compassion, and devotion.
Billy's professional journey began with C & S Bank and later thrived over more than thirty years at O.W. Jones Hardware, Thomaston Hardware, and Rogers Cash and Carry. His commitment extended beyond his career as he wholeheartedly served several Primitive Baptist churches as an interim Elder before finding his calling at Flat Rock Primitive Baptist Church, where he ministered until his health began to decline. An accomplished scholar, Billy graduated from R.E. Lee Institute in 1962, earned an Associate Degree in Business from Gordon College, and furthered his education at Georgia State College. His thirst for knowledge reflected both in his professional endeavors and his pastoral duties.
Billy was also a proud veteran of the United States Navy, serving four years and continuing his service in the active reserves for several years. His commitment to service did not end there; he was a Mason for over 57 years, serving as Worshipful Master at East Thomaston Lodge No. 175 in 1983 and 1985. His contributions as a Mason and Shriner were a testament to his dedication to his community. A man with a heart for children, Billy and his wife, Fran, were known for ensuring that every child at church received a Christmas gift, embodying selflessness and love. His personality shone brightest when he ministered to others, establishing connections that fostered joy and support in the lives of many.
Billy is survived by his sister, Myrna (Randy) Pope of Moreland, GA, along with nieces Rita Welch (David) Baughcum, Amanda, Kayla, and nephews Marty (Lynn) McKinley and Chris Pope. He is also survived by several great nieces, great nephews, and great-great nieces and nephews who cherished his presence in their lives. Billy was preceded in death by his parents, Bennie Edgar Morgan and Daisy Helen Stephens Morgan, and his beloved wife, Fran McKinley Morgan. He leaves behind a legacy of service, faith, and love that will continue to inspire those who knew him.
