The Rev. Hubert L. Flanagan, Jr., 83, of 720 Maple Dr., Griffin, died Sunday, July 15th, 2012 at his home. Funeral services for Rev. Flanagan will be held Wednesday, July 18th, 2012 at 11:00 a. m., at the First United Methodist Church in Griffin. Rev. Kevin Lobello, Dr. Don Harp, Dr. Malone Dodson and Rev. Jim Winn will officiate. Rev. Flanagan was born on November 28th, 1928 in Athens, a son of the late Hubert L. Flanagan, Sr., and Esther Combs Flanagan. He received a Bachelor of Arts Degree from the University of Georgia in 1948 and a Master of Arts Degree in 1949. Rev. Flanagan was a veteran of the U. S. Army Air Corps and served his country during the Korean conflict. After his military service Rev. Flanagan enrolled in Emory University and received a Bachelor of Divinity degree in 1956. For 43 years he served as a pastor in the United Methodist Church. He began his ministerial career as a student pastor at the Oglethorpe Estates Methodist Church. His service continued at St. James United Methodist Church in Athens, the First United Methodist Church in Hartwell, the First United Methodist Church in Winder, the First United Methodist Church in Thomaston, Rome District, Trinity on the Hill United Methodist Church in Augusta, and the First United Methodist Church in Griffin. He also served as Conference Secretary for the United Methodist North Georgia Conference and was a delegate to the National General Conference of Methodist Churches. Rev. Flanagan was an avid University of Georgia football fan and he was active in the communities where he lived and served as a pastor. He was a member of the Kiwanis Club, past president of the Rotary Club,a member of the UGA Bulldog Club, and was on the Board of Directors for the Salvation Army, as well as many other activities. For the past several years he continued to serve the community of Thomaston as a member of the staff of the Pasley-Fletcher Funeral Home. Rev. Flanagan is survived by his wife of 56 years, Katie C. Flanagan; three sons, Randall L. (Sarah C.) Flanagan, Reid W. (Marcy M.) Flanagan, and W. Patrick (Lauren P.) Flanagan; and a sister, Mary F. Crumbley. He had eight grandchildren and one great grandchild at the time of his death. The family of Rev. Flanagan will receive friends in the Fellowship Hall of the First United Methodist Church in Griffin on Wednesday immediately following the funeral service.
