J. Eugene Rogers

March 5, 1925 — February 16, 2013

Mr. J. Eugene Rogers, 87, of Thomaston, died Saturday, February 16th, 2013, at his home. Mr. Rogers was a native of Thomaston, a son of the late T. B. Rogers and Annie Love Holloway Rogers. He was a 1942 graduate of R. E. Lee Institute and after high school joined the U. S. Navy in 1943. He served during World War II and was discharged in 1946. After his Navy service Mr. Rogers attended Emory University and was graduated with a Bachelor of Arts Degree. He continued his education at Mercer University and earned a Masters in Education degree. He was an educator for the City of Thomaston School System from 1953 until 1972 and taught Chemistry at R. E. Lee Institute. After his retirement from the teaching profession he was store manager for Shellys' Dry Goods for many years. Mr. Rogers was a longtime, faithful member of the First Presbyterian Church. He had served as an Elder in the church and was currently an Elder Emeritus. He is survived by his daughter, Janice R. (Kelly) Penn of Macon; and three sons, Dr. David E. Rogers of Atlanta, Dr. Steven G. (Kim) Rogers of Augusta and Walt J. (Selena) Rogers of Niceville, FL. Nine grandchildren and three great grandchildren also survive. He was preceded in death by his wife, Martha Polk Rogers.
