Jewel Davis Mathews died peacefully at home November 20, 2009. Jewel Mathews was born in Talbotton, Georgia on July 25, 1914, to Carolyn Louise Birdsong and Clarence Earnest Davis. She attended The Pleasant Hill School. Her Grandfather, Dr. J. C. Birdsong was President of the Board of Trustees. She was a member of the First United Methodist Church of Thomaston, Georgia, where she taught Sunday School for many years. She was a member of the UMW and the Altar Guild. She was a member of The Thomaston Garden Club and The Thomaston China Painting Club. 'Miss Jewel' loved family, horticulture, travel, cooking, sewing and fishing. She ensured that each grandchild was versed in baiting a hook, threading a needle, and keeping a garden. She was preceded in death by her husband, Louis Potter Mathews, her brother, Thomas Jefferson Davis and her son Edmond Rylander Mathews. She is survived by her daughter Ann Sturdivant (Paul); grandchildren, Georgia Ann Sturdivant McMurray (Carl S.), Mary Mathews Eubanks (J. Kenneth), Paul Willis Sturdivant, III (Sandra), and Tracy Mathews Mendez-Vigo (Luke); daughter-in-law, Terry Timmerman Mathews, several great grandchildren and cousins. She is also survived by devoted caregivers, Cleonia Walker, Annette Chapman, Dianne Price, Evelyn Bush and Suzie Thurman. Funeral Services will be held Tuesday, November 24, 2009 at 11:00 A.M., at the Pasley-Fletcher Funeral Home Chapel. Burial will be in South View Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 9:30 A.M. until 11:00 A.M., Tuesday, at the funeral home. Memorial contributions may be made to The Thomaston-Upson County Humane Society, Inc., P.O. Box 1152, Thomaston, Ga. 30286, or The First United Methodist Church Altar Guild Fund, 132 Cherokee Rd., Thomaston, GA 30286 or the charity of your choice.
