Mr. Johnny Leon Newman, 84, of Thomaston, retired business owner of Newman Sales and Service Appliances, died Saturday, August 3rd, 2013 at his home. Mr. Newman was a graduate of the Class of 1947 of R. E. Lee Institute. After high school he joined the Merchant Marines and served for six months. He then served his country in the U. S. Navy for two years. Mr. Newman opened his business in 1957 and was the Westinghouse and Maytag dealer. He retired from this business in 1997, then served for 16 years as a bailiff for the court system in Upson County. He was a member of the Thomaston Masonic Lodge and the Al Sihah Shrine Temple in Macon. Mr. Newman attended Trinity Baptist Church. He is survived by his wife of 61 years, LaVerne Newman; his daughter, Janice (Ray) Crutchfield of Thomaston; his sister, Betty Elrod of Thomaston; his granddaughter, Casey C. (Sam) Hogan of Valdosta; and two great grandchildren, Catherine-Claire and Emory Hogan.
