Mrs. Mercedes Estevez 'Vee' McDonald, 92, of Thomaston, died Saturday, June 23rd, 2012 at Riverside Nursing Center. Mrs. McDonald was a native of Tampa, Fl. She was a recipient of the Tampa Teachers Club Medal of Honor in 1936 and later taught Spanish for the U. S. Army Air Corps during World War II. After moving to Macon Mrs. McDonald was employed as a librarian for Mercer University. She was a former member of the Vineville Baptist Church in Macon. Mrs. McDonald retired in 1982 and she and her husband, the late James E. 'Jake' McDonald III, moved to Thomaston. She was a member of the First Presbyterian Church of Thomaston. She is survived by her two daughters, Kay (David) Dunaway of Thomaston and Martha (Jerry) Mullinax of Columbus; three grandchildren, Lauren Cover of Snellville, Phil Mullinax of Statesboro and Bruce (Jenna) Dunaway of Thomaston; six great grandchildren, Jeremy Cover, Amanda Cover, Maddie Mullinax, Meredith Mullinax, Morgan Mullinax, and Ava Dunaway; and several nieces and nephews.
