Miss Clarice Evelyn Mitchell

June 30, 1921 — September 24, 2022

Miss Clarice Evelyn Mitchell, age 101, of Thomaston, died Saturday, September 24, 2022, at the residence of her niece. Funeral services for Miss Mitchell will be held Thursday, September 29, at 4:00 PM, at the First Baptist Church of Thomaston. Rev. Ted Kandler will officiate, and interment will follow in South View Cemetery. The family will receive friends at the church for one hour prior to the funeral service.

Miss Mitchell was born in East Thomaston on June 30, 1921, the youngest of six daughters of Rev. George W. and Myrtle Shearon Mitchell. She attended public schools in Thomaston and Upson County, graduating as salutatorian of the R. E. Lee class of 1938. She was the top graduate of the Tift College class of 1942. She earned a master's degree from the University of Georgia and also completed additional coursework that qualified her for the sixth-year teaching certification. She later studied in Dijon, France. Miss Mitchell's career as a teacher spanned 43 years. She taught for 41 years in several areas of Georgia, including Perry, Atlanta, and Gainesville. She taught English, Latin, and French mostly at the high school level, but later years included college level teaching. Upon retirement, she spent two years as a volunteer teaching English at a Baptist college in Japan. Miss Mitchell had traveled in 48 of the United States, across Canada, and in major countries of Europe. While in Japan, she visited several other Asian countries. She was an active member of the First Baptist Church of Thomaston where in recent years she taught Sunday School and led a women's mission group.

In addition to her parents, Miss Mitchell was preceded in death by her sisters: Emma Smith, Laura Smith, Louise Dyer, Margaret Hooten, and Edna Ruth Mitchell. She is survived by her niece, Rosemary Dyer of Thomaston and her nephew, Richard Dyer and his wife Barbara of Norris, TN; a great niece, Jenny Dyer of Knoxville, TN; and a great nephew, Jeff Dyer and his wife Stephanie of Knoxville, TN. Two great great nephews and several cousins also survive.
