Mr. Calvin Smith Ellington, 94, of Thomaston, died May 23, 2019, at Riverside Health and Rehab. Funeral services for Mr. Ellington will be held Tuesday, May 28, at 11:00 AM, at the First Baptist Church of Thomaston. Rev. Bill Barber and Mr. Donald Ellington will officiate. The family will receive friends at the church from 10:00 - 11:00 AM. Interment will be Wednesday, May 29, at 11:00 AM, at Eternal Hills Memory Gardens, 3700 Stone Mountain Highway, Snellville, GA 30039. Mr. Ellington was born in Culloden, Monroe, County,GA, on September 8, 1924, to the late Louie Smith Ellington and Susie Persons Ellington. The family moved to Upson County, and he was educated in Upson schools, graduating from R. E. Lee Institute in 1941. In 1942, he enlisted in the Army Air Corps and was trained as a radar technician. At the close of World War II, he was stationed with the 20th Air Force on Guam. After returning to civilian life, he attended Marsh Business College in Atlanta and received an accounting degree. On November 18, 1949, Calvin and Betty Cathleen Wade were married. He worked for Picker X-Ray Corporation, and then later for Eastman Kodak Stores, Treck Photographic, and VWR Scientific, retiring at age 65 in 1989. He was baptized in 1950 at Kirkwood Baptist Church, later ordained a deacon at Woodlawn Baptist Church in 1960. At these churches and later at Glen Forest Baptist and Mt. Zion Baptist, he and Betty held many positions and made many lasting friendships. In December, 2001, they moved to Thomaston and joined First Baptist Church. In addition to his wife, Mr. Ellington is survived by two sons: Wayne Calvin (Laney Meadows) Ellington of Butler, TN, and Donald Smith (Sally Hasbrook) Ellington of Mobile, AL; a brother, Thomas Jefferson Ellington of Thomaston, seven grandchildren, four great grand children, and several nieces and nephews. Those desiring may make memorial contributions to First Baptist Church Building Fund or a fund of the donor's choice at First Baptist Church, 208 South Church Street, Thomaston, GA 30286.
