Mr. Donald Nelson Gossett, affectionately known to friends and family as "Don," was born on June 30, 1942, in Atlanta, Georgia. He passed away peacefully on Sunday, February 16, 2025, at his residence in Thomaston, Georgia, with his beloved daughters by his side. He was 82.
A dedicated professional, Don served with distinction from 1960 until 1994 when he retired with the rank of Captain from the Atlanta Fire Department. He began his career at the age of 17 when the minimum age was 18, but due to his will and determination he was allowed to begin early. He also shared his passion for adventure as a Scuba Diving Instructor and owner of a Scuba Diving Shop for many years. While employed with the Atlanta Fire Department, he was involved with Arson Investigation and Underwater Recovery. His commitment to safety and education made a significant impact on countless lives throughout his career. Don was a proud graduate of Sylvan High School in Atlanta, GA, Class of 1960, where he was known for his vibrant personality and contagious enthusiasm for life.
He is survived by his devoted daughters, Stacey Gossett (Terry) White of Thomaston and Britteny Leigh Gossett Dutton of Cumming. Don's legacy also lives on through his 18 cherished grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren. He is also survived by two nephews, Scott and Craig Gossett both of Texas.
Don was preceded in death by his parents, Lloyd A. Gossett and Louise Freck Gossett, and his four children, Ivan Nelson Gossett, Monica Louise Sparks, Christopher George Gossett, and Michelle Elizabeth Gossett, and his brother, David Gossett. Each of these individuals held a special place in his heart and will be remembered fondly.
In honoring his memory, the family invites all who knew him to celebrate the vibrant life that he lived, filled with love, laughter, and adventure. As they reflect on the joy he brought to their lives, they find solace in knowing he has left a lasting legacy that will be cherished by generations to come. A celebration of life will be held on his birthday, June 30, 2025, at St. George Island, Florida, a place he cherished.
