Mr. Hubert P. Thompson, 90, of Thomaston, died Saturday, August 14, 2021 at the Sunny Grove Assisted Living Center in Barnesville. Funeral services for Mr. Thompson will be held on Thursday, August 19, 2021 in the Chapel of the Fletcher-Day Funeral Home at 2:00 PM. The Rev. Jason Weeks will officiate and burial will follow in Upson Memorial Gardens. The family of Mr. Thompson will receive friends at Fletcher-Day Funeral Home on Thursday from 1:00 until 2:00 PM. Mr. Thompson was born in Thomaston on May 30, 1931, a son of the late Jesse Benjamin Thompson and Effie Evalou Ellington Thompson. He was a 1951 graduate of R. E. Lee Institute. Mr. Thompson served his country in the U. S. Air Force from 1951 through 1955 and during this time was stationed in Korea. He was a self-employed livestock broker for many years and hauled cows and hogs for Thompson Wholesale Meats. A member of the Fellowship Baptist Church, Hubert was an avid gardener whose green thumb nurtured a prolific production of beautiful vegetables from early spring through late fall. He was an excellent cook whose crispy cornbread and fried corn were favorites on any dinner plate. The dressing he made and served each Thanksgiving was heartily enjoyed by others who gathered around the holiday table, and he was a master at curing hams. Hubert was a sharp card player who almost always beat his opponents at Spades and Rook, and he loved nothing better than to emerge the victor and recount the strategic moves made during the game—including counting cards. He had a great love for and pride in his family, and he had cherished friends he kept for a lifetime, many of whom knew him as Butch. Traveling to new places was a favorite activity he enjoyed with his family, and he never missed R.E. Lee football on Friday nights, whether at home or away. No one could split a log cleaner than Hubert, except perhaps his grandson Blake, and he relished a blazing fire on a chilly day. He was a devoted and generous husband to both of his wives, and in retirement loved visiting with friends over the breakfast table of local restaurants discussing the politics of the day. Mr. Thompson is survived by his wife, Dianne Harbin Thompson; a daughter, Diane (Dan) Greathouse of Thomaston; a son, Tommy (Marie) Thompson of Easley, SC; a stepdaughter, Lynn (Mike) McGahee of Thomson, GA; four grandchildren, Ashli (Matt) Farrar of Denver, CO, Blake (LeAnn) Odom of Thomaston, Jesse (Mabry) Thompson of Easley, SC, and Abi (Jared) Tschupp of Atlanta; six great grandchildren, one great-great grandchild, and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his first wife of 40 years, Marlene Mathews Thompson, and five siblings, Kathleen Riley, Jesse B. Thompson, Jr., Bill Thompson, Ruth Ellerbee and Mildred Jones. Contributions in memory of Mr. Thompson may be made to the Fellowship Baptist Church, 1165 Hannah's Mill Road, Thomaston, GA 30286, or the donor's favorite charity.
