Mr. Melvin Jack Sawyer, 87, of Thomaston, died Sunday, July 13th, 2014 at West Village Retirement Community. Funeral services for Mr. Sawyer will be held Wednesday, July 16th, 2014 at 11:00 a. m., at the First Baptist Church in Thomaston. Rev. Bill Barber will officiate and burial will follow in South View Cemetery. Mr. Sawyer was born in Sebring, Fl., on January 5th, 1927, a son of the late Jack Sawyer and Mary Turnbull. He moved to Thomaston at an early age and was a 1944 graduate of R. E. Lee Institute. Mr. Sawyer joined the U. S. Army in 1945 and took his basic training at Fort Lennongrad, MO. He finished his basic training on the day the war ended and was stationed in Frankfurt, Germany during the Allied Forces Occupation. He he returned to Thomaston after his military service he began working for Thomaston Mills. He retired as sales manager for the yarn division in February 1996 after 49 years of service. Mr. Sawyer was an avid golfer for over 50 years. He won numerous tournaments in Thomaston and at other clubs. He was a member of the First Baptist Church. Mr. Sawyer is survived by his daughter and son-in-law, Sherrie Sawyer and Ken Yeomans of Macon. The family of Mr. Sawyer will receive friends at Pasley-Fletcher Funeral Home on Tuesday from 5 until 7 pm.
