Mr. Richard Stephen McDaniel, 71, of Thomaston, died Thursday, August 5, 2021 at his home. Funeral services for Mr. McDaniel will be held on Saturday, August 7, 2021 at 11:00 AM at the Fellowship Baptist Church with Rev. Jason Weems and Rev. Jason Weeks officiating. Burial with Masonic rites will follow in Upson Memorial Gardens. The family of Mr. McDaniel will receive friends at the church on Saturday from 10:00 AM until the funeral hour. Mr. McDaniel was born in Cartersville on March 8, 1950, a son of the late William Ray and Lillian Love Smith McDaniel. He was a 1968 graduate of R. E. Lee Institute and graduated from Georgia Southern College in 1972. He completed his Master's Degree at Columbus State University in 2006. Mr. McDaniel served the City of Thomaston as a police officer from October of 1985 until his retirement in March of 2012. At his retirement he held the rank of Captain. He also taught Criminal Justice at Southern Crescent Technical College for several years and was currently serving part-time as a Constable for the Upson County Magistrate Court. Mr. McDaniel was a member of Fellowship Baptist Church. Mr. McDaniel is survived by his wife, Rebecca Pierce McDaniel; seven children, Heather Perry Davison (Britt), Holly Perry Shelley (Josh), Hope McDaniel Gattie (Dean), Alex McDaniel, Jamie Pierce Webb (Steve), Jennifer Pierce Elliott (Dusty), and Jessica Pierce Witte (Rick); a brother, Haden McDaniel (Anabolena); twelve grandchildren, Bo Davison (Lindsey), Hunter Mills, Remington Mills, Karleigh Shelley, Jayson Shelley, Marena Shelley, Chloe Potts, Carlin Elliott, Bree Webb, Aria Witte and Adalyn Witte; and seven great grandchildren. In addition to his parents, Mr. McDaniel was preceded in death by his first wife, Delane McDaniel, and a brother, William David McDaniel. Fletcher-Day Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
