Mr. William R. “Red” Newton, Sr., age 96, of Hendersonville, NC, died Sunday, June 14, 2020, in Hendersonville. A graveside memorial service with military honors will be held on Wednesday, July 1, at South View Cemetery in Thomaston, GA, at 10:00 AM. Rev. Brian Everett will officiate. Mr. Newton was born in Sylvania, GA, on September 16, 1923, to the late Benjamin Henry Newton and Eula Bertha Oglesbee Newton. He moved with his family to Thomaston at the age of nine. Following high school, he enlisted in the U. S. Navy in 1942, and served aboard the submarine USS Bass until the end of World War II. He reenlisted in the Navy in May, 1947, and in 1953, he transferred to the Air Force, retiring as a Chief Master Sergeant in 1969. His total service time was 25 ½ years. Mr. Newton was of the Methodist Faith. In addition to his parents, Mr. Newton was preceded in death by two sons: William R. Newton, Jr. and David A. Paul, and a sister: Dewease Lewis. He is survived by his wife, Quinell Paul Newton of Hendersonville, NC; a son, David Wayne Newton of Meansville, GA; and a daughter, Becky Franz-Paul of Hendersonville, NC. Five grandchildren and ten great grandchildren also survive. Those desiring may make memorial contributions to the charity of their choice.
