Anne Lewis Gilmore New of Thomaston, GA passed peacefully at home with family on May 3rd, 2017. She was born to James Leland Gilmore and Margaret Haven Lee Gilmore on August 6, 1928 in Lavonia, Georgia and was married to the late William Madison New. She was predeceased by her sisters Vera Hortense Gilmore and Winnie Lee Gilmore Anderson. She is survived by her 6 daughters and their husbands, Dianne and Fred Quarles of Savannah, GA; Caroline Dunlap of Cataula, GA; Patricia and Steve Turner of Manakin Sabot, VA; Nedra and Vince Musashe of Auburn, AL; Ginny Dean of Columbus, GA; and Marijo Lucas of Wilmington, DE; 9 grandchildren and 7 great grandchildren. Mrs. New carried herself with grace, emotionally present and deeply caring, and she fully embodied the spirit and values of her Christian faith that was central to her daily life and living. These qualities were evidenced in her sincerity and generosity; friendships that endured over her life-time; involvement and leadership in the community, church, and clubs. She was a graduate of R.E. Lee High School in 1945, where she played basketball, made life-long friends and met the love of her life and husband, Madison. She went to Wesleyan College in Macon and when Madison returned from the war they married and gave life to 6 girls. She was an active member of the First Presbyterian Church of Thomaston for 70 years where she served as Treasurer for the Women of the Church, was active in the Birdsong/Jenkins Circle, active in the Silver Circle, and presented an Honorary Life Membership in 1998 by the Presbyterian Women. She was active in all areas of the church’s life, Sunday School, Vacation Bible School, and Women of the Church where she served as Treasurer for many years. She was a member of the DAR and the Green Thumb Garden Club, and was active in the PTA where she served as 9th District Director and member of the State Board of the GA PTA of GA, and served as secretary for the State Board of the GA PTA. She started a Girl Scout Troup shortly after she married, and remained active the Girl Scouts throughout her life. She served in a number of positions including leader to several troops, Service Team Director, Area Chairwoman, and financial supporter to Girl Scouting. She was presented the Shining Star Award on April 28, 1986, an award given to those volunteers who have previously received the Thank Badge, Girl Scouting highest award and have contributed to give unusual amounts of their time and talents. She also cherished time with her friends. She played Bridge with friends in a Bridge Club that met weekly throughout her life, and enjoyed dinner out weekly with another group of friends for many years. She enjoyed traveling, attending Georgia games in the camper, vacationing in her condo in Florida, and researching our genealogy. Memorial contributions can be made to the First Presbyterian Church, 403 Birdsong Street, Thomaston, Georgia 30286, the Thornwell Home for Children, or other organizations which she supported. Viewing will be held Friday, May 5, 2017, 5-6:30pm at Fletcher-Day Funeral Home, and Funeral services will be held at First Presbyterian Church, May 6, 2017 at 1pm. Rev Glen Gilstrap will officiate the service and burial will take place in Crystal Hill Cemetery in Thomaston. Fletcher-Day Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
