Mrs. Betty M. Lackey, 89, of Thomaston, passed away November 1, 2016 at Riverside Health and Rehab in Thomaston. Funeral services will be held at 11:30 AM Friday, November 4, 2016 in the Chapel of the Fletcher-Day Funeral Home with Rev. Bob Wilson officiating. Interment will follow in Upson Memorial Gardens, Thomaston. The family will receive friends for one and one-half hour prior to the service at Fletcher-Day Funeral Home. Mrs. Lackey was born on July 17, 1927 in Thomaston and remained a lifelong resident of Thomaston and Upson County. She was preceded in death by her husband of 60 years, Mr. James R. Lackey, her mother, Ms. Lottie Mae Buchanan, and her brothers, Marion Montgomery and Gene Montgomery. She is survived by her children, Janet (Tim) Hill of Senoia, GA, Jeff (Brenda) Lackey of Kingsport, TN, and Mike (Nancy) Lackey of Leesburg, GA. She is also survived by six grandchildren, thirteen great grandchildren and one great-great grandchild. Additionally, she is survived by one brother, Richard (Fran) Montgomery of Thomaston, sisters-in-law Doris Montgomery of Thomaston and Geraldine Lackey of Charlotte, NC, and one brother-in-law, Rev. Vernon McDaniel of Asheboro, NC, along with numerous nieces and nephews. Also left to cherish her memory is a special friend and caregiver, Lesley Johnson. Her family will forever remember her special talents in the kitchen, especially her Christmas cakes. Each person had a special cake and she never said 'No' when asked to make those. She not only was a special cook but also a gifted seamstress who made costumes for her children and grandchildren, clothes, beautiful quilts (with help from her husband) and many other things that made a house a home. She enjoyed life so much and especially the time she got to spend with family and special friends, whether on vacation or them just 'coming by' to see her and James. There were many family reunions, fish fries and ice cream churning 'get togethers' at their home on Bradshaw Road. You never left her home hungry as can be attested by so many that made a point of being there at supper time. She was a charter member of Trinity Baptist Church, working in the nursery for many years. She retired from William Carter Company after 40 plus years of service. Whether you called her Mrs. Lackey, Betty, Ms. Betty, mama, grandmama, sister, Aunt Betty or just friend, there was never a moment when you ever doubted that she was special and that she considered each of us just as special. The family would like to acknowledge the staff of West Village Retirement Home and Riverside Health and Rehab for the outstanding help and assistance they provided to our mother during the past seven years. Donations may be made in Mrs. Lackey's memory to either Trinity Baptist Church, 410 South Church St., Thomaston, GA 30286, or to a charity of your choice.
