Mrs. Doris Vining Harris

Mrs. Doris Vining Harris, age 87, formerly of Thomaston, passed away on May 15, 2020. Graveside services will be Wednesday, May 20, 2020 at Shiloh Baptist Church with immediate family only. Dr. David Chancey will be officiating. Doris was born in Thomaston, Georgia September 26, 1932. At an early age she began playing the piano at church and participated in singings with her talented cousins. She graduated from R. E. Lee High School in 1950. Doris married J.E. (Phil) Harris on September 16, 1951 at Valley Grove Baptist Church in Thomaston. She and her husband moved to Claxton, Georgia in 1963. While in Claxton she was pianist of First Baptist Church for a number of years. She provided leadership in the children and youth departments teaching Sunday school and G.A.’s. She worked for the Evans County School System for 22 years. She began her career as Claxton Elementary School secretary and later became the secretary to the Superintendent of Schools. Doris loved gardening, traveling and spending time with her grandchildren. After retirement, Doris and Phil relocated to Thomaston, Ga where she lived until Phil’s death. She moved to Memory Care Cottage in Oviedo, Florida in December 2017. She became known as the singing, smiling lady at the Memory Care Cottage. She brought such joy to everyone around her. Mrs. Harris was preceded in death by her parents; Grady and Lois Vining and husband, Joseph E. (Phil) Harris. Survivors include two sons Chris (Cheryl) Harris of Lawrenceville, GA and Todd (Donna) Harris of Pine Harbor, GA; two daughters Debbie (Mike) Varner of Oviedo, Fl. and Dee (Gilbert) Chapa of Belton, TX. 10 grandchildren and 15 great-grandchildren. In lieu of flowers memorials may be made to Shiloh Cemetery Fund, 2737 US-19, Thomaston, GA. 30286 or to the charity of your choice. Fletcher-Day Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
