Mrs. Edna Lois “Tubby” Atwood Smith, 88, of Thomaston, died Friday, November 15, 2019, at Riverside Health and Rehab. Funeral services for Mrs. Smith will be held on Sunday, November 17, 2019, at 3:00 PM in the Chapel of the Fletcher-Day Funeral Home. Rev. Ted Kandler will officiate and interment will follow in Glenwood Cemetery. The family of Mrs. Smith will receive friends at Fletcher-Day Funeral Home on Sunday from 2:00 PM until the funeral hour. Mrs. Smith was born in Atlanta on February 26, 1931, daughter of the late George and Mae Harris Townes Atwood. She attended Girls High School in Atlanta and graduated from Brown High School. During her high school career was rated as the top female athlete at her school. Mrs. Smith graduated from the Georgia State College for Women in Milledgeville and earned her Master’s Degree from Peabody/Vanderbilt University. She moved to Thomaston in 1953 to teach Physical Education at R. E. Lee Institute for many years. In 1963 Mrs. Smith married her husband, the late Bobby C. Smith, a union that would last for 39 years. Later in life she worked as a parapro at Upson Lee South Elementary School and also as substitute teacher for the school system. Mrs. Smith loved all sports and was a 5K running athlete. Off the athletic field she was a member of the Bridge Club and was very active with all school and activities of her children. Mrs. Smith was a member of the First Baptist Church. She is survived by her children, Pat Smith of Thomaston, Kim S. (Dr. Bert) Wall of Barnesville, Jeff (Tammy) Smith of Dunwoody and Scott Smith of Thomaston; and three grandchildren, Josh Wall, Ben Wall and Max Wall.
