Mrs. Evelyn Bentley Moore

November 5, 1927 — December 17, 2019

Mrs. Evelyn Bentley Moore, 92, of Thomaston, died Tuesday, December 17, 2019, at her residence surrounded by loved ones following a brief illness. Funeral services for Mrs. Moore will be held on Thursday, December 19, at 2:00 PM, in the chapel of Fletcher-Day Funeral Home. Interment will follow in Crystal Hill Cemetery. The family will receive friends at Fletcher-Day Funeral home on Thursday from 12 noon until the funeral hour. Mrs. Moore was born in Upson County on November 5, 1927, to the late Samuel Thomas Bentley and Beulah Turner Bentley. She was a 7th generation Trice, having descended from William B. Trice, one of the original pioneers of Upson County. She graduated from R. E. Lee Institute in 1944 and began working for Thomaston Mills Bleachery Office in the mid 1940’s. She retired from Thomaston Mills in 1989. She was a member of Grace Primitive Baptist Church but also considered First Baptist and Mountain View Baptist as her church homes. She was very active in her community and held past or present memberships in the Business and Professional Women's Club, Spade & Trowel Garden Club, Retired Teachers Association, Primetimers Club of First Baptist Church, Bosom Buddies of URMC and the URMC Auxiliary where she volunteered as a Pink Lady for several years. Mrs. Moore, or Evie, as she was called by many of her friends, always loved to laugh and talk with everyone she met. You never knew what she might say to you but you knew it would more than likely make you smile. She believed in supporting her community by attending as many community functions as she could. She was also a faithful friend to many and spent time calling or going to visit friends and family who might be sick or just need a lift. She would usually arrive with something good to eat and a big smile. Last but certainly not least, she loved her cats. It all started with one stray mama cat with kittens which showed up at the home she and Lamar shared on the Flint River. There were many cats through the years, and she died leaving behind her two beloved house cats and constant companions, Blue Eyes and Angel. In addition to her parents, Mrs. Moore was preceded in death by Charles Lamar Moore, her husband of 20 years; Melvin Jack Sawyer, her first husband and father of their daughter; and a step son, Joe Moore. She is survived by her daughter, Sherrie Anne Sawyer (Ken Yeomans) of Macon, Georgia; Step-Son, Clay Moore (Angie) of Thomaston; Grandchildren Meredith Bennett of Chesapeake, Virginia; Amy McDuffie of Abbeville, Georgia; Brittany Moore Darnell of Macon, Georgia; Chad Moore of Thomaston, and Jonathan Moore, Joseph Moore, and Jeff Moore, all of Smyrna, GA. She is also survived by 3 great grandchildren, Maryclara Bennett, Aubrey Bennett and Harlee Huff. Flowers are welcomed since Evelyn always commented that funerals should have a lot of beautiful flowers. Memorial contributions may also be made to the Empty Stocking Fund, c/o SouthCrest Bank, Thomaston, GA 30286, or to the Upson Humane Society, PO Box 1152, Thomaston, GA 30286. Fletcher-Day Funeral Home of Thomaston is in charge of all arrangements. Condolences and remembrances may be expressed at www.fletcherdayfuneralhome.com.
