Mrs. Geraldine Smith Walker, age 88, of Thomaston, died Tuesday, May 31, 2022, at her residence. A funeral service to celebrate the life of Mrs. Walker will be held Friday, June 3, 2022, at 1:00 PM, at East Thomaston Baptist Church. Rev. Joey Smith will officiate, and interment will follow in South View Cemetery. The family will receive friends Thursday evening, from 5:00 until 7:00 PM at Fletcher-Day Funeral Home. Mrs. Walker, a native Upsonian, was born October 20, 1933 to the late George Edward Smith and Mary Roquemore Smith Colquitt. She was a 1952 graduate of R. E. Lee Institute. She retired in 1998 from the City of Thomaston as an accounting clerk. She was a faithful member of East Thomaston Baptist Church where she volunteered with the nursing home ministry, Grace Seekers, at Harborview Health Care for over twenty years. She felt as though she was family to all of the residents she encountered. She said it was such a joy to serve in the nursing home. She also served as a nursery worker until her health wouldn’t allow it, and she served as church clerk and the benevolence assistance clerk for many years. Mrs. Geraldine loved her church, church family and her pastor. Mrs. Walker had a servant’s heart which was made evident by the way she treated others. Every year she loved to help fill Christmas shoe boxes for Samaritan’s Purse. Her boxes would be so packed full that it would be hard for the lid to shut. She felt that she knew the children for whom she was packing boxes. She loved visiting shut-ins and she emphasized she loved to visit anyone. She also served as a poll worker for many years. She will be missed by everyone who knew her. Mrs. Walker is survived by two daughters: Denise (John) Grogan of Flowery Branch, GA, and Dawn (David) Stewart of Alpharetta, GA; one son, Donald Walker of Thomaston; three grandchildren: Elisabeth Schacht Miller, Nicholas (Renee) Schacht, and Casey Anderson; nine great grandchildren: Lily, Maddy, and Katey Schacht; and Austin, Jacob, Brooklyn, and Emily Chasteen; Arlo and Crosby Stoltz, and Grace Miller. Several nieces, nephews, and many friends also survive. In addition to her parents, Mrs. Walker was preceded in death by her husband of 68 years and 11 months, George Ernest Walker, two sisters, Josephine Smith Williams and Margie Smith Lussi, and a son-in-law, Hans Schacht, Jr. The Walkers attributed the success of their marriage to a genuine and abiding love for each other and their faith in our Lord. Wherever they lived, they remained faithful to God and His Church. Couples who pray together stay together! They said the words, “I love you” to each other every day and showed that they meant it by their actions. Those desiring may make memorial contributions to East Thomaston Baptist Church Benevolence Fund, 206 Park Lane, Thomaston, GA 30286. Fletcher-Day Funeral Home is in charge of all arrangements.
