Mrs. Judy Rebecca Storey Payne, 77, of Thomaston, died Friday, July 7, 2017, at her residence. Funeral services for Mrs. Payne will be held Sunday, July 9, at 2:00 PM, at the First Baptist Church of Thomaston. Rev. Bill Barber will officiate, and burial will follow in South View Cemetery. The family will receive friends Saturday evening, July 8, from 6:00 - 8:00 PM at Fletcher-Day Funeral Home. Mrs. Payne was born to the late Marvin Pope Storey and Doris Trice Storey on December 11, 1939, in Thomaston, GA. She was a 1958 graduate of R. E. Lee Institute and later earned a degree Summa Cum Laude from Mercer University. She was retired from Thomaston OB-GYN where she worked as an insurance specialist, and she had previously worked for radio stations WTGA and WSFT. Mrs. Payne was an active member of the Spade and Trowel Garden Club. In the Spring of 2017, she was awarded 2nd Place Distinguished Member by the Garden Clubs of Georgia. She was a Pink Lady with the Upson County Hospital Auxiliary, a member of the John Houston Chapter DAR, and a Past President of the Westwood PTO. She enjoyed playing bridge and was a watercolor artist. Mrs. Payne was a member of the First Baptist Church of Thomaston where she was active in the Bonoth Sunday School Class. In addition to her parents, Mrs. Payne was predeceased by a brother, Fred Storey and a sister, Bobbie Hudgins. Survivors include her husband, Harold Lester Payne of Thomaston; two daughters: Julie Ann (Mike) Crane of Midland, GA, and Joni (Scott) Young of Decatur, GA; one granddaughter, Amanda Elizabeth Crane of Midland, GA; a sister, Patsy S. Dowdy of LaGrange, GA; nieces, Michele (Chris) Peacock of Peachtree City, GA; Nancy (Carl) Adams of Montezuma, GA; and Lara (Mike) Welsh of AL; nephews: Al (Krista) Payne of Griffin, GA; and Steve (Dennine) Payne of Zebulon, GA; cousins, Becky Hemperley of Thomaston, GA; and Steve Shepard of New Jersey. Several great nieces and great nephews also survive.
