Mrs. Laura Virginia Pitts Salter, 100, of Thomaston, died Wednesday, July 9th, 2014 at Riverside Health and Rehab. Mrs. Salter was born in Upson County on February 24, 1914, a daughter of the late William Marshall Pitts,Sr., and Essie Helms Pitts. She and her husband, the late Noel James Salter, were married on August 6, 1930 and celebrated over 70 years of marriage until his death on April 28, 2001. Mrs. Salter was a member of the Valley Grove Baptist Church for over 80 years. She taught 10-11 year old juniors Sunday School for 40 years. She read the Bible over 30 times and some of her favorite passages included Psalms 23, Psalms 91 and Proverbs 31. Mrs. Salter was employed by the Martha Mills Division of the B. F. Goodrich Company and worked on the night shift. She also worked as a sales clerk for the R. B. Maxwell Stores and at the Neal Logue Department Store. Mrs. Salter was a very talented seamstress who made many of her own clothes as well as dresses and outfits for her daughter, Myrna and granddaughter, Kim. Quilting was another of her favorite hobbies. Mrs. Salter quilted over 200 quilts and her family treasures the ones that they have. Mrs. Salter was an excellent cook She also took great enjoyment by working in her yard and growing flowers. Mrs. Salter is survived by her two children, Myrna Salter (Wyman) Barnett of Snellville and Randall Salter of Jacksonville, FL; her brother, Fred O. 'Billy' (Laverne) Pitts, Sr., of Thomaston; two grandchildren, Chet (Julie) Barnett and Kim Barnett; and two great grandchildren, Lauren Barnett and John Barnett. Numerous nieces and nephews, great nieces and great nephews, and cousins also survive. In addition to her parents and her husband, she was preceded in death by brothers and sisters, W. M. Pitts, Jr., MacKenzie Cooke Pitts, Charlie Pitts, Helms Pitts, Clemmie Wrolstad, Uhland Pitts and Al Pitts. Funeral services for Mrs. Salter will be held on Friday, July 11th, 2014 at 11:00 a. m., at Valley Grove Baptist Church with Rev. Carey Pitts officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. The family of Mrs. Salter will receive friends at Pasley-Fletcher Funeral Home Thursday from 5 until 7 pm. Contributions in memory of Mrs. Salter may be made to Valley Grove Baptist Church, 1372 Atwater Rd., Thomaston, GA 30286.
