Mrs. Louise Hall Maguire

February 4, 1923 — October 2, 2022

Mrs. Louise Hall Maguire, 99, of Thomaston passed away Sunday, October 2, 2022.

A Funeral Service will be held Thursday, October 6, 2022 at 11:00 a.m. in the chapel of Fletcher-Day Funeral Home. The funeral will be officiated by Rev. Steve Maguire, Rev. Jack Maguire, Rev. David Maguire. The family will receive friends from 10 a.m. to 11 a.m. Thursday Morning at the funeral home.

Born in Blue Ridge, Georgia, February 4, 1923, to Carl Hall and Helen Haskins Hall, she learned the tenets of community service and hard work from her parents who were active in the town’s business, civic and cultural arenas.

In 1940 she attended the University of Georgia in Athens. During her time at UGA, World War II was raging and, as with many women serving on the homefront, she contributed to the university body in multiple ways, including playing trombone in The Red Coat Marching Band in 1943. She was also elected one of the campus beauty queens in 1942 (Miss Pandora). She was also a member of Alpha Gamma Delta sorority.

While at the University of Georgia, she met former All-State Quarterback and UGA football player Harold Omer Maguire. The two married while Harold served in the U.S. Army Air Corps where he earned the Distinguished Flying Cross, Presidential Unit Citation, and Purple Heart.

After returning from World War II, the two lived in the prefab community in Athens while Harold finished his bachelor’s degree. They raised three boys, Mike, Jack, and Steve in Thomaston and Warrenton, Georgia. Though her education was disrupted by the war and early motherhood, she later carved time to earn her bachelor’s degree and began a career as an educator. She taught elementary school with the Upson-Thomaston School System for 15 years before retiring.

Following retirement, she devoted time to her family and volunteering throughout the community and church. She was the matriarch of a family deeply involved in the civic, educational, and faith-based lives of their communities. Louise was a longtime member of First Baptist Church of Thomaston where she served in Vacation Bible School, House of Care, Children’s Sunday School teacher, a driver for the ‘Cancer Car,’ Women’s Missionary Union, Pass the Salt Ministry, and an active member of her Sunday School class.

She was known for her kind, graceful nature, encouragement, and acceptance of all people, regardless of class, race or background. She loved her family as a wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother as well as a ‘mother’ to many children she taught.

Louise enjoyed reading, gardening, and cooking.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Harold Maguire, brother, Jack Hall, son, Mike Maguire, and grandsons, Don Maguire and Doug Maguire.

She is survived by sons, Jack and Linda Maguire, Lexington, South Carolina; Steve and Lisa Maguire, Thomaston, Georgia; Five grandsons: Mark and Jami Maguire, Fayetteville, Georgia; Jonathan and Cecilia Maguire, Norcross, Georgia; Kris and Allison Maguire, Columbus, Georgia; John and Maggie Maguire, Thomaston, Georgia; and David and Katheryn Maguire, Thomaston, Georgia, along with 18 loved and treasured great-grandchildren. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to Samaritan’s Purse, PO Box 3000, Boone, NC  28607 (www.samaritanspurse.org) or to Northridge Church of Thomaston, 109 S. Center St., Thomaston GA.
