She worked her way through Berry College, earning a B.S. in Home Economics. Mrs. Mallory treasured her years at Berry College and appreciated the work program that gave her and many other young people the opportunity to attend college during the post-depression years. Upon graduation, Mrs. Mallory taught high school home economics one year in Franklin, Georgia, before moving to Thomaston where she worked for the County Extension Service in Upson County as Home Economist, improving the lives of hundreds of families as she taught ladies homemaking skills including nutrition, food preservation, and consumer economics. In 1947, Mrs. Mallory married Love A. Mallory, Jr., a native of Upson County who had returned home from World War II. Mrs. Mallory stayed home for many years to raise four children. In the 1970’s, she returned to work as an English teacher at R.E. Lee Junior High School. A dedicated member of the First United Methodist Church of Thomaston, Mrs. Mallory was particularly devoted to the Service Sunday School Class and was a member of the Ladies’ Circle. She served as a Cub Scout den mother and a Girl Scout leader. She was a founding member and 1956-57 president of the Spade and Trowel Garden Club, and she enjoyed a weekly game of bridge with a special group of ladies for many years. She was a member of the John Houston chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution (DAR) and served as Vice-Regent from 1992-1994 and Regent from 1994-1996. Mrs. Mallory is remembered by her family as an excellent southern cook and a skilled manager of her home. She enjoyed working in her yard and made sure there were beautiful flowers blooming year round. As a devoted grandmother, she was known to spend time tutoring any of her grandchildren who fell short in the study of grammar. In addition to her parents and stepfather, Grady Whitten, Mrs. Mallory was preceded in death by Love Mallory, her husband of 64 years.
