Mrs. Mary L. Hogan, 90, formerly of 601 Peachtree Drive in Thomaston, died Thursday, January 16, 2020, at River Place in Forsyth, GA. Her family will receive friends at Fletcher-Day Funeral Home Sunday evening, January 19, from 4:00 until 6:00 PM. A private memorial will be held later. Mrs. Hogan was born in Apple Valley, GA, on March 30, 1929, to the late Marion Varnell Littlejohn and Annie Blanche Colquitt Littlejohn. She married Ralph Edwin Hogan in 1950. In over 50 years of her teaching career, Mrs. Hogan taught 32 years in the Thomaston City School system. After retirement, Mrs. Hogan continued her teaching career at Tift College of Mercer University and Gordon College. One of the things of which Mrs. Hogan was most proud was the number of former students that entered the teaching profession in the field of Spanish. Mrs. Hogan was a member of the National Education Association, the Georgia Association of Educators, and the Thomaston City Education Association. Mrs. Hogan served as chairman of the local Crisis in Education Committee, was elected by the Foreign Languages Teachers of Georgia as Spanish Teacher of The Year and was selected as a Star Teacher. She was the chief adviser to the school yearbook, “The Rebel,” the Spanish Club adviser, Spanish Department chairman, and the Audio-Visual Coordinator. She performed volunteer work with the Thomaston-Upson County Chamber of Commerce. She was named Thomaston-Upson County’s “Woman of the Year” in 1979. Mrs. Hogan was the first female elected to serve on the Thomaston City Council. She served as a Spanish translator for the City of Thomaston until she was well into her eighties. Mrs. Hogan was a member of Thomaston First United Methodist Church where she played the piano for several classes. Mrs. Hogan was preceded in death by her parents and her husband. She is survived by a son, Ralph E. (Denise) Hogan, Jr. of Concord, GA; a brother, Marion Clayton (Jean) Littlejohn of Charleston, SC; two grandsons: Michael Jason Hogan of Griffin, GA, and Justin Blake (Anna) Hogan of Barnesville, GA; and three great grandchildren: Michael Hogan, Blakely Hogan, and Rawlings Hogan. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorial contributions be made to St. Jude Children's Hospital, 501 St. Jude Place, Memphis, TN 38105.
