Mrs. Norma Woods Brown

March 15, 1928 — September 22, 2024

Mrs. Norma Woods Brown, age 96, of Forsyth, and formerly of Thomaston, died Sunday, September 22, 2024, at Eternal Hope Hospice in Griffin, GA. Graveside funeral services for Mrs. Brown will be held on Wednesday, September 25, at 11:30 AM, in Upson Memorial Gardens with Rev. Herb Flanders officiating. The family will receive friends at Fletcher-Day Funeral Home on Wednesday morning from 10:00 until 11:00.

Mrs. Brown, a native of Richland, GA, was born on March 15, 1928, to the late Troy Leonard Woods and the late Mae Talon Woods. She was a graduate of Brenau College where she earned a degree in education. Mrs. Brown taught at John B. Gordon School, R. E. Lee Grammar School, and finished her 30-year career as a 5th grade teacher at East Thomaston School. She later went back into the schools to read to the children dressed as Mimi the Clown. When her grandchildren, who lived in Forsyth, begged her to come and read to their classes, she donned her clown outfit and drove there regularly, hoping that she would never have to explain to law enforcement if she got pulled over. Her volunteering to read later was enjoyed by residents at Providence Nursing Care, where she also used her experience as an aerobics instructor to lead exercise classes there. Mrs. Brown volunteered at the Sibley Center of Callaway Gardens for ten years, started the first Red Hatters Chapter in Thomaston, and baked goodies which she shared with the Thomaston Fire Department where she was known as "the baker lady".

Mrs. Brown was a member of Thomaston First Methodist Church where she volunteered with many committees, including the Bereavement Committee.

In addition to her parents, Mrs. Brown was preceded in death by her husband, Wyna M. Brown and two siblings, Doris Woods Culpepper and Marion Woods. She is survived by a daughter, Marcia (Clay) English of Forsyth; a son, Michael (Rhonda) Brown of Thomaston; three grandchildren: Michelle (Jonathan) Parham, Anna (Brian) Barfield, and Adam (Emmy) English; and three great grandchildren: Claire, Westin, and Brayden Barfield.

Mrs. Brown's family would like to express their appreciation to the staff at River Place and to Chichor, Tammy, and Robyn for their care and compassion.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to St. Jude Children's Hospital, 501 St. Jude Place, Memphis, TN 38105.

Fletcher-Day Funeral Home of Thomaston is in charge of all arrangements. Condolences and remembrances may be expressed at www.fletcherdayfuneralhome.com.
