Mrs. Patricia "Patti" Peacock King

May 13, 1950 — September 7, 2016

Patricia “Patti” Peacock King of Thomaston, 66, passed away on Wednesday, September 7, 2016 after a courageous two-and a half year battle with cancer. A service to honor her life will be held Friday, September 9, 2016 at 3:00 pm at the First Presbyterian Church in Thomaston with Dr. Glenn Gilstrap, Dr. Al Simmons and Rev. Jackie Jenkins officiating. The family will receive friends at the church on Friday from 1:30 pm until the service hour. Burial will take place at the Cedar Hill Cemetery in Cochran, Georgia on Saturday, September 10, 2016 at 11:00 am. Patti was born in Hawkinsville, Georgia and spent a wonderful childhood growing up in Cochran, where she was surrounded by extensive family. While in high school, she was on the basketball team and was actively involved in many school and community organizations. She attended Middle Georgia College and began competing in scholarship beauty pageants. She was crowned “Miss MGC Freshman” in 1969 and immediately followed that with the “Miss Middle Georgia” for 1969-70. She competed under this title in the Miss Georgia pageant. She then attended the University of Georgia where she received both her Bachelors and Masters degrees. While at UGA she was a member of the Alpha Chi Omega sorority. Patti had a long and fulfilling teaching career in schools in Athens-Clarke County, Social Circle, Dodge County, Worth County and Upson County (where she retired in 2005). It was during her time teaching in Dodge County that she met her husband of 42 years, Frank King. Patti followed Frank as he advanced through the ranks of public school administration. She was always supportive and proud of his achievements as a school and community leader. Patti loved teaching and working with young people. She always said that it was her calling in life. She was a Y-club advisor for 25 years and, due to her service, the King family was recognized by the State YMCA of Georgia in 2002 as “Georgia Family of the Year.” Patti also supported and sponsored several other clubs and student activities outside of the classroom during her career in education. She served in numerous teaching and service capacities in the churches she attended as well. Her father instilled in her a love for travel as a child, as he drove his family all across the U. S. during summer vacations. Prior to her illness Patti had recently visited Europe and Israel and had dreamed of seeing many more places in her life. She loved spending time at the beach with her daughters and grandchildren and traveled there as often as she could – even after her diagnosis. Patti was an avid reader and a devoted fan of movies. Her love for the musical and dramatic arts and her respect for sports were passed to her daughters. She took great pride in her family and was their greatest cheerleader. Patti was preceded in death by her parents, Perle and Rosemary Peacock, and her sister, Sue Peacock Ellis, all formerly of Cochran. She is survived by her husband, Frank King of Thomaston, and daughters Amy (Courtney) Howell of Tifton and Beth (Tyson) Summers of Statesboro. She leaves behind six grandchildren – 5 little boys and one little girl – who are Jace, Gracie and Cam Howell of Tifton and Jake, Walker and Anderson Summers of Statesboro. In addition, she is survived by several aunts, uncles and many cousins. Patti is also survived by nieces and nephews whom she adored and for whom she served as a ‘second mama.’ Memorial donations may be made to the First Presbyterian Church of Thomaston Memorial Fund, 403 Birdsong St., Thomaston, GA 30286. Fletcher-Day Funeral Home of Thomaston is handling the arrangements. Condolences and remembrances may be expressed at www.fletcherdayfuneralhome.com
