Saralu (Sue) Jones Lewis, 92, died January 14, 2020. A native of Turner County, GA, she was the daughter of the late Janie Lois Helms and Claude Lindsey Jones. She was preceded in death by her husband of 50 years, Ray Lewis, and five siblings. Sue lived in Thomaston most of her life and was a dental hygienist by trade, but after the birth of her first child she devoted her life and energy to her family as a wife, mother, and homemaker. Active in her community, she was a long-standing member of the First Baptist Church of Thomaston. In addition to working in the five-year old Sunday School department for 25 years, she worked in Vacation Bible School and with Girls in Action. She was a Den Mother for the Cub Scouts, worked with both the Brownies and Girl Scouts, and was a PTA Room Mother while her children were in grade school. She had a special love for birds and animals, and they responded to her in kind. An avid reader, Sue was keenly interested in many subjects including the history of Thomaston and Upson County, GA. She was also an accomplished gardener, growing and caring for beautiful things as long as she was able. Survivors include two children, Wendy Lewis (Peter Brill) of Santa Fe, NM and Jamie Lewis (Marin VanHoy-Lewis) of Atlanta, GA, two step-grandchildren, and many (and much loved) nieces and nephews. The family would like to express their gratitude for all of the people at the West Village Retirement Community who cared for Sue for last five years of her life, and the caregivers at Thomaston Hospice. Funeral services will be Friday January 17, 2020 at 11AM at Fletcher-Day Funeral Home. Grave-side services will follow at South View Cemetery. The family will receive friends at 10AM at the funeral home. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the First Baptist Church of Thomaston, GA, 208 South Church Street, Thomaston, GA 30286, or Thomaston Hospice, 512 S Center St, Thomaston, GA 30286.
