Mrs. Verlie Smith, age 87, of Thomaston, died Thursday evening at Riverside Health and Rehab. Funeral services will be held on Sunday, February 7, at 2:00 PM, in the chapel of Fletcher-Day Funeral Home. Rev. Bill Barber will officiate, and burial will follow in South View Cemetery. The family of Mrs. Smith will receive friends at Fletcher-Day Funeral Home on Saturday evening, February 6, from 5 until 7 PM. Mrs. Smith was a 1945 graduate of R. E. Lee Institute. She had worked as a seamstress for the William Carter Company, and she later worked at the Thomaston Mills Store. She was a member of the First Baptist Church of Thomaston. Mrs. Smith, daughter of the late William and Sallie Mae O'Neal, is survived by her husband, Calvin Smith, of Thomaston; four children: Carol Smith Harpe of Peachtree City, GA; Terrell Andrew (Sue) Smith of Rock Hill, SC; Lynn (David) Hardage of Sharpsburg, GA; and Tracey (Scott) Hall of Kennesaw, GA.; six grandchildren: Leslie Harpe Chapman of Macon, GA; Dacia Rae Smith of Rock Hill, SC; Melissa Harpe (Ben) Melancon of Lawrenceville, GA; Damon Andrew (Courtney) Smith of Savannah, GA; Emily Kathryn Hall and Seth William Hall, both of Kennesaw, GA.; and one great grandchild, Hope Larkin Melancon of Lawrenceville, GA.
