Mrs. Virginia Smith Anderson, 97, of Thomaston, died Friday, July 24, 2020 at Upson Regional Medical Center. A graveside funeral service for Mrs. Anderson will be held Tuesday, July 28, 2020 at 11:00 AM in South View Cemetery, with Elder Lee Price officiating. Interment with Military Honors will follow. Carrie Virginia Smith was born in LaGrange on December 14, 1922, daughter of the late Alvin Lehman and Lillie Belle Perdue Smith. She was a graduate of LaGrange High School. In 1943, the United States Marine Corps authorized a Women's Reserve, and, as a patriotic young woman, Virginia enlisted in December of that year. She proudly served her country as a Supply Clerk, at Camp Lejeune in North Carolina, and was honorably discharged in January of 1946. Upon her return home to LaGrange, Virginia’s two sisters introduced her to Grover Anthony Anderson, and they were married in 1947. In 1956, they moved with their two young children, Ron and Susan, to Thomaston. Mrs. Anderson was active during her children’s school years, volunteering as a Room Mother, Scout Leader, and PTA Officer. She was also an active volunteer with the Golden Age Club of the First United Methodist Church, and with the Methodist Youth Fellowship. During these years, Mrs. Anderson worked alongside her husband in his accounting business, and, after her children left for college, worked at Upson County DFACS for twenty-five years, Upson County Senior Center for one year, and Upson County Water Department for ten years. Mrs. Anderson was a member of the Flint River Primitive Baptist Church. Survivors include her daughter, Jennifer Susan Anderson of Thomaston, and her son, Ronald Anthony (Cheryl) Anderson of Biloxi, MS. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Flint River Primitive Baptist Church, Thomaston First Baptist Pass the Salt Ministry, or a charity of one’s choice.
