Rev. Cleveland Allen "Cleve" McSwain, age 67, of Thomaston, died Saturday, October 12, 2019, at Brightmoor Hospice in Griffin. Funeral services for Rev. McSwain will be held Wednesday, October 16, 2019, at 11:00 A.M. at Antioch United Methodist Church. Rev. Bill McGeath, Rev. Eddie Herring, and Bro. Buddy Williams will officiate with interment to will follow in The Rock United Methodist Church Cemetery. The family will receive friends at Fletcher-Day Funeral Home on Tuesday evening from 6:00 - 8:00 P.M. Rev. McSwain was born in Thomaston on September 9, 1952, to the late Grover McSwain and Gladys Passmore McSwain. Rev. McSwain graduated from Robert E. Lee Institute in 1970 and later earned an Associates Degree of Music Education from Gordon College and a Bachelor of Education from Georgia Southwestern College with a minor in music. He further earned two Masters Degrees with the first being a Masters of Divinity from Gammon Theological Seminary and the second being a Masters in Human Services and Counseling from Capella University. He also earned a Doctor of Divinity degree in 2008. Rev. McSwain had served as a pastor in Wyoming for sixteen years. He also served at The Rock United Methodist Church, the Yatesville United Methodist Church, and the Antioch United Methodist Church in Thomaston. Employed as a counselor and music professor at the College of the Marshall Islands, Rev. McSwain also worked with the Federal Emergency Management Agency as an inspector. He was an accomplished musician playing the trumpet beginning at the age of nine, and also playing the piano. He played professionally in many bands and performed at many events. Rev. McSwain served his country in the United States Navy. In addition to his parents, Rev. McSwain was preceded in death by a brother, Grover Stanley McSwain. He is survived by his wife of 45 years, Sara "Cissie" McSwain; a daughter, Amy (Chad) Shirey of Concord, GA; a son J. C. (Dana) McSwain of Thomaston; six grandchildren: Cherrie Crummie,Sabrina N. Smith, Michael Smith, Alexis Schwanbeck, Hunter Shirey, and Olivia Shirey; and seven great grandchildren. Fletcher-Day Funeral Home of Thomaston is in charge of all arrangements.
