SFC (Ret) Janie Elizabeth Turner passed away in Griffin, GA on July 15, 2010. She was born in Griffin on September 1, 1921, to Errett E. Turner, Sr., and Jessie Lee Hamilton Turner. In addition to her parents, she was predeceased by brothers E. Emory Turner, Jr., and Jimmy L. Turner; sisters Merrill Bernadine Turner and Melba T. Harrison; sister-in-law, Jean Turner; brother-in-law Erwin Lockhart; and nephew Kenneth Lockhart. She moved with her family to Thomaston, GA at the age of 10 and graduated from R.E. Her adventurous spirit led her to enlist in the Women's Auxiliary Corps, U.S. Army, where she served honorably for 20 years in various assignments in Administration and Recruiting. Her duty stations included Ft. Benjamin Harrison, IN; Ft. McClellan, AL; Nashville, TN; and Ft. Shafter, HI. While stationed in Nashville as a recruiter, she was acquainted with Maybelle Carter and her family and other notables in the country music industry. After retiring from the Army in 1971 as a Sergeant First Class , she remained in Hawaii for 10 years working in the personnel department of the Liberty House department store. She returned to Georgia to be near her family and resided for the last 5 years at The Woods Assisted Living Home in Griffin. She was a devoted member of the Southside Baptist Church. Janie was a gracious hostess to her many family and friends who enjoyed visiting her in Hawaii. She crocheted afghans and baby blankets for her family and friends who will cherish them in remembrance of her. She is survived by sisters Martha T. Grant and her husband Bayard Grant of Hoschton, GA, and Barbara T. Lockhart of Forest Park, GA; sisters-in-law Nancy Turner of Doraville, GA, and Barbara Turner of Summerville, TN; and many nieces and nephews and their spouses and children.
