Mr. Wallace Rhodes, 77, of 100 Oakdale St., Thomaston, died Wednesday, June 5th, 2013 at Upson Regional Medical Center. Funeral services for Mr. Rhodes will be held on Saturday, June 8th, 2013 11:00 am at the First Baptist Church with Dr. Ed Cliburn and Dr. Rex King officiating. Burial will be in the Mt. Hebron Baptist Church Cemetery in Randolph County, GA at 3:30 pm. Mr. Rhodes was born in Coleman, Ga., a son of the late John Sibley Rhodes and Nadia Houston Rhodes. He graduated from Cuthbert High School as a four-sport letter winner and later attended Auburn University. Mr. Rhodes came to Thomaston in 1964 to serve as head boys basketball coach, assistant football coach, and track coach at R. E. Lee Institute. Following the conclusion of his coaching career Mr. Rhodes continued to serve the Thomaston School System as principal of R. E. Lee Institute and later as Superintendent of Schools. In 1997 Mr. Rhodes was elected to the Thomaston City Council, a post he held until his death. He also served on the Board of Directors for The Gilmore Center. Mr. Rhodes was an active member of the First Baptist Church. He had served as a Sunday School Teacher and President of the Fellowship Sunday School Class, had been Chairman of the Benevolence Committee, and was a Board Member for the Thrift Shop. Mr. Rhodes is survived by his wife, Lynda Rhodes; his daughter, Levonne R. Smith of Columbus; his son, John (Sheri) Rhodes of Herndon, VA; and three grandchildren, Houston Smith of Columbus, and William Rhodes and Eryn Rhodes, both of Herndon, VA. In lieu of flowers, contributions in memory of Mr. Rhodes may be made to the First Baptist Church Building Fund, 208 South Church St., Thomaston, GA 30286.
