William H. "Bill" Howell

Mr. William H. 'Bill' Howell, 83, of Thomaston, died Tuesday, January 14th, 2014 at Upson Regional Medical Center. Mr. Howell was a native of Upson County, a son of the late Jim Henry Howell and Allie Boyt Howell. He served his country in the U. S. Air Force and the U. S. Army, and retired after 22 years of service. He was a Russian linguist and at the time of his retirement served in the Pentagon as the Non-Commissioned Officer in Charge in the Department of the Joint Chiefs of Staff. After retiring from the military Mr. Howell returned to Thomaston and opened Howell's Radio and operated this business for a number of years. He enjoyed running his store and also enjoyed retirement. Mr. Howell was a member of the Antioch United Methodist Church. Mr. Howell is survived by four daughters, Patricia Smith of Macon, Linda Hortman of Thomaston, Dora Howell of Iron Mountain, MI, and Cheryl (Mark) Pumphrey of New Braunfels, TX; a sister, Amie Gresham of Loganville; seven grandchildren and 11 great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his wife, Jean Howell. Funeral services for Mr. Howell were held on Friday, January 17th, 2014 in the Chapel of the Pasley-Fletcher Funeral Home. Rev. Judson Barnes officiated and burial was in Glenwood Cemetery with full military honors and Masonic Rites. Memorial contributions may be made to the Antioch United Methodist Church, P. O. Box 1300, Thomaston, GA 30286.
